Why do we need spaces to see one thing as an art?

Why does art own value when it is displayed in an exhibition or
a museum?
Why do we need spaces, galleries or museums to see one thing as art?
A rock lying on the pavement for ages never grabs attention as a piece of art, but the same rock, when picked and kept in the centre of a museum, we start to notice and observe it; what makes the audience interpret it as a piece of art?
The setting for art is widespread today. We used to create a stage and a space to display it, but today, the entire planet has become its stage. We no longer wait for an exhibit space; we create an exhibit by simply displaying the art on open ground or in an empty desert.
But still, these things work when they are human-made art; what about the ones made in nature? Do we need a space for them, or will we start seeing them as art with time?
